Hydrogenated oil, partially hydrogenated oil, trans fats: These are names for a modified fat that was introduced into our foods several decades ago that we have all come to know and fear. And well we should. Hydrogenated oil was meant to have a "forever" shelf life, whether that be in our favorite grocery store isles, or in our life-sustaining arteries. This substance is found is so many foods, such as cookies, crackers, baking mixes, and frozen prepared foods. We even sometimes use it in our homes in baking, such as when we use shortening for pie crusts.
For quite some time I have been meaning to create a pie crust recipe that would taste good, but contain no shortening. Because of the motivation of "Tackle It Tuesday", I have finally done it! My "Tackle It" was the featured guest post at 5 Minutes For Mom's Tackle It Tuesday, so if you would like to read more about how I make a shortening-free pie crust like this...,

Congrats on being featured for this week's Tackle it Tuesday!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. I am so impressed that you grind your own wheat for one - and just the way you make everything from scratch.
On a side note - great job on breastfeeding your twins. I only made it for 6 weeks! You are one busy Mom:)
I will take a look at your recipe but doubt I will ever be brave enough to make it. Good job for coming up with this recipe.
ReplyDeleteP.S. So good to see you this weekend I had a fun visit with you.
What a great tackle and share today ! I will do this and use my wheatmill...thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou did an amazing job on this tackle! I do believe that now, even I might be able to make a nice pie crust from scratch. This is truly something I would never even consider attempting before!
ReplyDeleteGreat recipe! I've tried to stop using shortening, too; I just can't figure it out in some of my cookies though. I also found a recipe for pie crust that uses oil. It's kind of tricky to work with, but it's very flaky!
ReplyDeleteHi! So nice to meet you! I hopped over here from Tackle it Tuesday -- great crust recipe (not many people quadruple recipes as a matter of course!) I'll be giving it a try!
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh at your comment about nursing your littlest-s while being crawled upon! Oh, I remember those days! LOL.
Where are you (geographically speaking)? We're in Sinaloa. Living down here definitely "encourages" one to cook creatively...and from scratch, of course! I'm going to roam around your site a little!
Have a great week!
Yum I love Pie! I think that the crust is the best part.
ReplyDeletecongrats, Jen! Your short yet convincing explanation of hydrogenated oils has once and for all convinced me to be vigilant about keeping it out of my arteries!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great recipe Jen! I can't wait to try it. I love to find ways to make the things we love good for us! We missed you at the game...how is your Dad?
