The Freedom to Choose

Yesterday, as I was preparing to take the 7- and 9-year-olds to school, I noticed that the 3-year-old wasn't dressed and ready to go. I usually just take him along in his sleeper, but this morning, he was only sporting underwear. Although I had asked him several times to get dressed, even if it was only in a sleeper, I kept seeing him running around in, still, only his briefs. When I finally made the empty threat of leaving him home while I took the kids to school, he ran off, I thought, to get a sleeper on. When he returned, I was checking my email and had my back to him.

He said, "Mom, today, I'm going to make my own decisions." When I turned around, I saw that he was wearing this...

I couldn't help but laugh, couldn't help but let me make his "own decision", and off we went!

Thanks for listening.

  1. When my daughter was between 2 & 4 it was not uncommon to see her sporting about in her Cinderella and Tinkerbell costumes, complete with dress up plastic heels, this included Wednesday night church. I call it pick your battles. I'd much rather her dress like a fairy princess at 4 then 40.

Like 'Valerie Neal' referred to - pick your battles!!

Just be glad you hadn't needed to run into a store someplace or something similar ;-p

  5. Love it! I am finally starting to learn to pick my battles and let my daughter (5) wear whatever she wants...on weekends of course. I used to care what people thought of her outfit whenever we went to the store now if I see anyone staring I just smile and say she picked her own outfit out. She has school during the week and has to wear a uniform everyday.

  7. VeganMom, that is a really good question, and one I'm surprised I haven't been asked sooner! In January of last year, I became a vegan, obstaining from all animal products, including diary and eggs. During the summer, however, I became pregnant with my 10th child, and started getting super-strong cravings for non-vegan stuff, like cheese and cow's milk and sometimes even meat. Because I just wasn't experienced enough at living this way, I didn't have confidence that I could have a healthy pregnancy and be vegan, so I started doing dairy, eggs, and, occasionally, meats. My pregnancy is almost over now, and I've cut out the meat, but I'm still doing dairy (we have a cow). I'm not sure what I'll do after the baby comes. Still trying to find a balance with trying the get the family on board, which has been very, very difficult!

Thanks so much for your visit and I hope to hear from you again soon!

  10. 3 is my all time favorite age! I wish I blogged when either of my girls were that age.

My youngest daughter did similar things all the time. She went through many difficult clothing phases for me. Luckily it was w/ my 2nd, so I let her express herself more. With my 1st, I was a bit pickier & luckily for me, she was a bit easier, lol

Darling!!! that reminds me of some scarves we have that turn into shawls.

  11. He is very cute. My husband and I just laughed out loud at the picture. My daughter's 5 and I've made a practice of not worrying too much about the combinations she puts together as long as she's following rules for modesty. They're only little once!
