Women are falling all over the 17-year-old boy!

For Christmas, my husband gave me a few of his favorite movies, including the movie "Big", starring Tom Hanks, not realizing we already had a copy of it. The funny thing is, only three weeks before Christmas, after watching this movie with the kids, I had angrily tossed it in the trash can because of it's continual use of the Lord's name in vain. It had been many years since I had first watched it, and I guess I've sensitized myself to language like that in my older years, and it really bothered me.

Upon opening my husband's gift, I just kind of chuckled and asked where he had bought this movie and how much it had cost. He answered and asked why, and I told him what I had done, and that we would need to return the movie to Walmart.

But why should I take it back myself when I have a perfectly capable 17-year-old son to do it for me?...which is just what I asked him to do.

Bless his heart, he was so willing to do it as he knew he would probably have to change a twin diaper if he didn't, so off he went.

After returning the movie, he decided to meander to the electronics department and price some Zunes he was interested in. As he studied the price tags stuck to the edges of the shelves, he noticed that a woman standing next to him had dropped a video she had been looking at. This woman was old, and being the gentleman that he is, he stooped over to pick it up for her. However, no sooner than he tried to regain a standing position did he notice that the full weight of her upper body was lying on his back. He remained bent over for a time, thinking that she had tried to pick up the movie at the same time he did and had just bumped into him, but when she didn't get off, he realized something was wrong.

He reached his long arms around his back and wrapped them around her, carefully holding her as he twisted out from under her, then laid her on her back on the linoleum tile, as she still wasn't attempting to stand up. When he looked at her face, he immediately understood why. Her eyes were rolled back into her head, her mouth and tongue were in a gruesome expression and she was convulsing. Her husband was standing next to my son, speechless apparently.

The 17-year-old boy yelled, "Does anyone have a cell phone? I think we need an ambulance!" Someone immediately responded, as the 17-year-old boy was probably the ONLY person in Walmart who didn't have a cell phone, and upon receiving the phone, he quickly called 911 to explain what had happened.

No sooner than he had hung up the phone did the elderly woman rise up again, regain her composure and walk off with her husband.

Okay, 911, never mind.

Later on, as the 17-year-old boy continued his wanderings, he noticed the couple continuing their shopping as well, as if nothing had ever happened. Perhaps this happens to her all the time. I don't know.

One thing is for sure, though. If I ever have an epileptic seizure in Walmart, I hope there is a cute boy onto which I can fall...

...instead of the filthy linoleum tile. Thanks for listening.

  1. Holy Cow...I can't beleive that. That must of been so shocking. He handled it very well. She was lucky he was there to support her. Kind of scary. Tell him I said job well done!

  2. Oh please forgive me. IT all sounded SO strange that I quickly assumed that it was a set up (scam) and that you were going to say that the 17 year old soon realized that his wallet was missing. Man.....I need to get a grip and not assume the worst so often.

What a son to be proud of! HE did great! Number one rule is not to panic. And he followed through so good on that one.

Is it just me, or does anyone else still think it strange that the two of them (the older couple) just walked off together with no explanation or allowance of the medics to check her out and make sure she was okay......even if this was something that happens to her often.......which I find hard to believe since her husband stood there in a shocked fashion.

  3. I agree, Lynn. It's very odd that they just walked off! The whole thing was just crazy!

  4. Is it my scarce English or you tricked (somehow) with the title? I thought something different ;-) Ha!

  5. that's funny and frightening at the same time! What timing! :)

  6. I will not agree on it. I think warm-hearted post. Especially the title-deed attracted me to study the intact story.

  7. Probably I misunderstood and I expressed myself in a wrong way, feel free Jen to delete my previous comment, and sorry.
    Love.

  8. What a wonderful young man! You must be very proud.

  9. Alessandra, your English is just fine! Yes, I did mean to be tricky with the title! :) Usually that means that women are very interested, but in this case, it was literal!

  10. What a gentleman. I hope I can teach my boys to grow up that way.

One Sunday, our ward chorister had a grand mal seizure on the stand during the passing of the sacrament. It was scary. I'm glad the lady at Walmart was ok and seemingly unaffected.

  11. Wow, Karin! What a scary thing to have happen in sacrament meeting! I hope she's okay, too.

  12. Okay, Jen, thank you, that's exactly what I thought, so my few neurons are still working fine :D

  13. Oh my gosh I can't believe they just walked away after knowing he called 911. So weird.

  14. Wow, I thought the woman was being *COMPLETELY* inappropriate at first...till I read that her eyes were rolled back. How scary and what a great job he did in handling it! :)

  15. So I too was aprehensive like Lynn and RhondaRue ... and RhondaRue, a good scam artist CAN make their eys roll back in!

And Alesandra, you were definetly right in your first take on what she had written ;-p Jen used the good ole 'bait and reel um in' tactic (like fishermen do - bait the fish and reel them in. Writers like to bait your curiosity or interest and then reel you in to read the whole thing).

Our neighbor has bad epilopsy and is to the point where he often has grand mals back to back. Tis scary indeed to open my back door and find him standing there shaking like a leaf, wanting a ride to the ER.!!!

As numerous of the other commenters stated, I can't believe the couple just walked off with out a word. How rude!!! And if they had helped a seventeen year old guy going through something like that and he had then acted like they did - oh I can just imagine their response!!!

Your son deserves a whole week off from changing diapers for his quick thinking and grand response!

  16. Cheryl, about the diaper thing.....I don't think so! As they say in Spanish, "Dios se lo paga" which means "God will pay him". That's what I'm counting on!

  17. Wow!!! That is crazy!!! Kudos to him! :)

  18. JUst happen to find your blog from another... Been reading, now following.

What a crazy, yet believable story knowing people now a days. If it happened to me, I wouldn't ignore it.

    Stop on by...

    Blessings, Shannon

  19. Bravo to your 17-year old. How odd that she simply got up and walked away without a word. Odd. It must be something that has happened before and they are used to it? We are left to assume they know what they were doing.

    Blessings, Mari

  23. Ok, that's just weird. Why would they just continue on? I'm sure it's not the first time that's happened but it's still weird....

  24. that is just the wierdest thing I've ever heard.

  25. I have a friend who suffered a heat stroke when she was in her twenties (not to mention a myriad of other health issues she has picked up from 20+ years of doing mission work in the worst areas of the 3rd world, or whatever they call it now). One of her lasting effects is that her hair turned completely white right away and another is that, without much warning, she will just collapse like that. Then she's out for a few seconds and then gets up and feels much better. *Maybe* that's what was up with the woman in Walmart. . .

  26. what to say???? I am laughing my head off.....seriously!

  27. I too was sceptical at first, but then realized you were for real. I do wonder why there was no explanation of "sorry son, she does this occasionally" or something. They were a strage two, but a good laugh for you and especially your son.

    Good post.

  28. Aww! It's so refreshing to hear of a teenage boy who behaves as a gentleman! It's unfortunate (and a little ironic) that it was the older couple who were ill-mannered.

You must be extremely proud of the young man he's become! :)

  30. that is a really weird story. Sounds like your boy has a good head on his shoulder, tho. I'm sure you are proud of him!

  31. Wow, that's a bizarre situation. How great that your son was able to handle it so calmly. Now I'm curious . . . did he have to speak Spanish for the 911 call? Around here we don't have any English speaking emergency services. And if he did, another wow, since that really does require a level head to deal with an emergency AND explain it in a foreign language.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Expat Mom, this event occurred in the U.S. along a border town. The question is, though, did the elderly couple speak English? Of that we are not sure!

  33. Your son is amazing! Kudos to him!

And furthermore, I love Grama and her comments.

  34. Could it be that the elderly lady was recently diagnosed with something life threatening? Perhaps an inoperable brain tumor? They could have been told about the symptoms, that the convulsions could happen, so they were new to it... and maybe they see the doctor every day anyways? Often there isn't much you can do for seizures.

My 18 month old had a 40 minute grand mal seizure her first time in nursery. :( It's sad. All we can do is give her her meds and be happy if it doesn't last long. Of course we bring her to the ER every time just in case! But they can't do anything. :/

Either way, way to go to your son! What a guy!

I didn't realize you were pregnant again! I must catch up on your blog. :)
