A Day in the Life of Me
7:00 Nurse Hyrum
Encourage the kids to get ready for school and do their chores
7:30 Keep encouraging the kids a little more forcefully
7:39 Tell the kids, in somewhat of a loud voice, that they have one more minute to finish their chores and get in the car
7:41 Yell out the door at Conor as he is driving off to remind the kids to get a ride home with Amie, Landon's teacher.
7:45 Now begin encouraging the two little kids to finish getting ready for school
Begin cleaning up breakfast and wandering around the house to make sure the chores were done and, if not, begin planning the punishments upon arrival after school
8:16 Yell to Landon and Claire that their ride is here and to grab they back packs and run!

Kyla's Care
Twin's Bath
Ingredients
2 Cups Almonds
8 Cups Water
1/2 Cup Honey or Agave Nectar
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 Tablespoon Vanilla
Pinch Salt
Directions
Step 1: Soak the almonds overnight in a bowl of water.
Step 2: Drain the almonds and place in a blender with four cups of water. Blend for three to four minutes.
Step 3: Strain almond mixture through nylon hose or cheese cloth into a pitcher. You will have almond pulp left, as shown below, which can be used in other vegetarian recipes.
Step 4: Pour 4 more cups of water into the blender, along with the honey or agave nectar, the vanilla, cocoa, cinnamon and the salt. Add the strained almond mixture. This should fill your blender to near capacity, so blend on the lowest speed in order to avoid overflow.
Step 5: Once the ingredients are thoroughly combined, your almond milk is ready to be refrigerated.
Raw Tortilla Chips
Ingredients
4 cups frozen, uncooked corn
1 Tbsp plus 1 tsp lime juice
2.5 Tbsp olive oil
3/4 cup chopped red onion
2 tsp salt
1 3/4 cup ground flax seed
2 tsp chili powder
1 Tbsp cumin
1 clove garlic

Directions
Step 1. Combine all ingredients, except for 1 1/2 teaspoons of the salt, in a food processor and process until smooth.
Step 2. Divide recipe into four, then spread on four teflex dehydrator sheets, about 1/8 inch thick.
Step 3. Dehydrate for 30 minutes to an hour, then score to desired shape with a knife and sprinkle with remaining salt.
Step 4. Dehydrate for 12 to 24 more hours, then turn dehydrator trays upside-down, peel off teflex from the hardened batter, then dehydrate on the chips on screen trays for 12 more hours, or until crispy.

Step 1. Squeeze lime juice into a small sauce pan. Add bouillon cube. Heat until cube is melted.

15-Bean Soup
Ingredients
2 packages 15 bean soup
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 teaspoons salt

Step 1: The night before you plan on making this, place the beans in a large bowl full of water and leave to soak overnight. This makes the beans a bit easier to digest, if you know what I mean.
Step 2: In the morning, drain and rinse the beans, then place them in a crock pot along with the garlic and fill the crock pot with water to 1 inch from the top. Turn the crockpot on high and cook for about six hours or longer, until the beans are soft and tender. You may need to add water periodically.
Step 3: There will be a seasoning packet in your bean bag. Throw it away. It has artificial ingredients and food additives that are hard to say. You don’t need that. Just add the salt and pepper and stir. Your beans are now ready to serve. Garnish with chopped tomatoes, cilantro and avocados. My kids love to crumble tortilla chips on top!

1/2 cup raisins
3/4 tsp salt
4 cups wheat sprouts
Directions
Step 1. Combine all ingredients in a food processor until a dough ball is formed.
Step 2. Grease hands, then form dough into an 8“x4“x1” loaf and place on a greased cookie sheet
Step 3. Bake at 225 degrees F for 3 hours. When finished the outside of the loaf will be light-colored and hard, and the inside will be moist and muffin-like.

Raw Vegan Lime "Cheese" Cake
Ingredients
Ingredients for the crust:
2 cups raw macadamia nuts
1 cup shredded, unsweetened dry coconut
1 tablespoon lemon or lime zest
2 tablespoons fresh lemon or lime juice
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon sea salt
4 packets stevia or 4 teaspoons sugar
2 tablespoons agave nectar
1 tablespoon sesame oil or vegetable oil
Ingredients for the filling:
1 1/2 cups cashews, soaked for at least one hour
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons agave nectar
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon nutritional yeast
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons lemon or lime zest

Directions for the crust:
Pulse these ingredients in a food processor until well combined, but still a bit chunky. Make sure not to over process or the nuts will become oily.
Line a tart pan or pie plate with plastic wrap, then press this mixture into the pan. Place in the freezer to chill until firm.
Directions for the filling:
Blend all of the ingredients in a Vitamix until smooth, spread into the crust, and place in the freezer to chill until firm. Store in the freezer until about 20 minutes before serving. Remove the pie from the pan by lifting up the plastic wrap and set on a pretty plate. (It’s easier to cut this way.)
Enjoy!
P.S. If you would like to make a fruit topping for this, blend up some blueberries or strawberries with agave nectar in a blender, add fresh blueberries or cut-up strawberries to this mixture and chill. Pour it over a slice right before serving. It is DELICIOUS served this way!
Raw Chocolate Hazelnut Tart
Ingredients
For the crust:

For the filling:
1 cup + 2 Tbsp cocoa

4 cups cocoa powder
1 cup agave nectar
4 cups oat flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 cup maple syrup
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
3 Tbsp coconut oil, melted

Step 1. Mix all dry ingredients.
Step 2. Add in wet ingredients and mix well with hands, crumbling into small pieces, no larger than 1/2 inch balls.
Step 3. Dehydrate in dehydrator trays for three days.
Step 4. Transfer crumbs to food processor and process until the crumbs are no larger than 1/4 inch balls.
Store in freezer until ready for use in pie crusts and other raw confections.

Game Day Menu
Ingredients
For the doughnuts:
2 (.25 ounce) envelopes active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees)
1 1/2 cups lukewarm milk
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1/3 cup butter
5 cups all-purpose flour
1 quart vegetable oil for frying
For the glaze:
1/3 cup butter
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
4 tablespoons hot water or as needed
Directions
1. Sprinkle the yeast over the warm water, and let stand for 5 minutes, or until foamy.
2. In a large bowl, mix together the yeast mixture, milk, sugar, salt, eggs, shortening, and 2 cups of the flour. Mix for a few minutes at low speed, or stirring with a wooden spoon. Beat in remaining flour 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough no longer sticks to the bowl. Knead for about 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Place the dough into a greased bowl, and cover. Set in a warm place to rise until double. Dough is ready if you touch it, and the indention remains.
3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, and gently roll out to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with a floured doughnut cutter. Let doughnuts sit out to rise again until double. Cover loosely with a cloth.
4. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in confectioners’ sugar and vanilla until smooth. Remove from heat, and stir in hot water one tablespoon at a time until the icing is somewhat thin, but not watery. Set aside.
5. Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large heavy skillet to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Slide doughnuts into the hot oil using a wide spatula. Turn doughnuts over as they rise to the surface. Fry doughnuts on each side until golden brown. Remove from hot oil, to drain on a wire rack. Dip doughnuts into the glaze while still hot, and set onto wire racks to drain off excess. Keep a cookie sheet or tray under racks for easier clean up.

Whole Wheat Pizza
Ingredients
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 1/2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Directions
1. In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast over the top, and let stand for about 10 minutes, until foamy.
2. Stir the olive oil and salt into the yeast mixture, then mix in the whole wheat flour and 1 cup of the all-purpose flour until dough starts to come together. Tip dough out onto a surface floured with the remaining all-purpose flour, and knead until all of the flour has been absorbed, and the ball of dough becomes smooth, about 10 minutes. Place dough in an oiled bowl, and turn to coat the surface. Cover loosely with a towel, and let stand in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
3. When the dough is doubled, tip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and divide into 2 pieces for 2 thin crust, or leave whole to make one thick crust. Form into a tight ball. Let rise for about 45 minutes, until doubled.
4. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Roll a ball of dough with a rolling pin until it will not stretch any further. Then, drape it over both of your fists, and gently pull the edges outward, while rotating the crust. When the circle has reached the desired size, place on a well oiled pizza pan. Top pizza with your favorite toppings, such as sauce, cheese, meats, or vegetables.
5. Bake for 16 to 20 minutes (depending on thickness) in the preheated oven, until the crust is crisp and golden at the edges, and cheese is melted on the top.
Best Fudgy Brownies Ever
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups butter
1/4 cup water
4 eggs
4 teaspoons vanilla
2 tablespoons sour cream or yogurt
3 1/3 cups sugar
1 cup flour
2 cups cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips (optional)
1 1/2 cups chopped nuts (optional)
1/4 cup brown sugar, for topping
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Melt the butter.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients.
3. In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the wet ingredients.
4. Pour the wet ingredients into the large bowl and mix with the dry ingredients. If you are using the chocolate chips and the nuts, stir them in now.
5. Spread into a large, greased jelly roll pan.
6. Sprinkle with brown sugar.
7. Bake at 350 degrees F for about 25 minutes, or until a clean tooth pick inserted in the center comes out almost clean.
These brownies are best when served after being cooled in the fridge. For easiest cutting, use a plastic knife. I don’t know why, but it works!
Veggie Burgers
Ingredients
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 small onion, grated
2 cloves crushed garlic
2 carrots, shredded
2 small zucchinis, shredded
1 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1 egg, beaten
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 tablespoon vital wheat gluten (optional, but will help the patty hold together a little better)
Directions
Step 1. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over low heat, and cook the onion and garlic for about 5 minutes, until tender. Mix in the carrots and zucchini. Continue to cook and stir for 2 minutes. Remove pan from heat, and mix in oats, cheese, and egg. Stir in salt, transfer the mixture to a bowl, and refrigerate 1 hour.
Step 2. Preheat the grill for high heat.
Step 3. Mix flour and gluten, and place the mixture on a large plate. Form the vegetable mixture into eight 3 inch round patties. Drop each patty into the flour, lightly coating both sides.
Step 4. Oil the grill grate, and grill patties 5 minutes on each side, or until heated through and nicely browned.
Stuffed Appetizer Mushrooms
Ingredients
2 slices whole wheat bread
2 Tbsp butter
1/2 cup mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup parmesan cheese
24 medium sized mushrooms
1/4 cup onions, chopped
1/4 cup green onions, chopped
1/4 cup green peppers, chopped
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp cayenne peper
1/4 tsp dried thyme
Directions
Step 1. Remove stems from mushrooms; set caps aside. Finely chop stems; measure 1 cup (discard any remaining stems or save for another use).
Step 2. In a skillet, saute chopped mushrooms, garlic, onion and green pepper in butter until vegetables are tender and mushroom liquid has evaporated.
Step 3. Toast bread, then process in a food processor until they become crumbs or crumble by hand. Add bread crumbs, garlic salt, cayenne pepper, thyme and paprika to the sauteed mixture; mix well.
Step 4. Stuff into mushroom caps then sprinkle with mozzarella and parmesan cheeses. Place on greased baking sheets. Bake, uncovered, at 425 degrees F for 10 minutes or until heated through.

Vegan Carrot Cupcakes
Ingredients
6 tablespoons whole flax seeds
1 1/2 cups water
4 cups sugar
3 cups vegetable oil
6 cups flour
4 teaspoons cinnamon
4 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
2 teaspoons vanilla
6 cups grated carrots
2 cups craisins
Directions
Step 1: In a blender, blend flax seeds and water until smooth and creamy.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, combine oil, sugar and the flax seed mixture.
Step 3: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt.
Step 4: Add the flour mixture to the flax seed mixture, and stir until well mixed.
Step 5: To this mixture, add the vanilla, pecans, carrots and craisins.
Step 6: Pour this batter into greased pans or cupcake papers, and bake at 350 degrees F until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The time will vary depending on what size pan you use, but will probably be between 20 and 35 minutes.
Step 7: Frost with your favorite vegan or omni frosting and enjoy!
Potato Chips
Ingredients
5 potatos
1 quart of oil for frying
Salt for sprinkling
Directions
Step 1. Using the slicer side of a cheese grater, thinly slice potatoes, peeled or not, your preference.
Step 2. Fry in hot oil until slightly browned, then immediately place on paper towel-covered cookie sheet to absorb oil. Salt.

From the beginning God has made it clear that woman is very special, and he has also very clearly defined her position, her duties, and her destiny in the divine plan. Paul said that man is the image and glory of God, and that woman is the glory of the man; also that the man is not without the woman, neither the woman without the man in the Lord. (See 1 Cor. 11:7, 11.) You will note that significantly God is mentioned in connection with this great partnership, and we must never forget that one of woman’s greatest privileges, blessings, and opportunities is to be a copartner with God in bringing his spirit children into the world.
It is of great concern to all who understand this glorious concept that Satan and his cohorts are using scientific arguments and nefarious propaganda to lure women away from their primary responsibilities as wives, mothers, and homemakers. We hear so much about emancipation, independence, sexual liberation, birth control, abortion, and other insidious propaganda belittling the role of motherhood, all of which is Satan’s way of destroying woman, the home, and the family—the basic unit of society.

With respect to birth control, President Joseph F. Smith said, in 1917:
“I regret, I think it is a crying evil, that there should exist a sentiment or a feeling among any members of the Church to curtail the birth of their children. I think that is a crime wherever it occurs, where husband and wife are in possession of health and vigor and are free from impurities that would be entailed upon their posterity. I believe that where people undertake to curtail or prevent the birth of their children that they are going to reap disappointment by and by. I have no hesitancy in saying that I believe this is one of the greatest crimes of the world today, this evil practice.” (Gospel Doctrine, pp. 278–79.)
On these matters, the First Presidency has recently said:
“We have given careful consideration to the question of proposed laws on abortion and sterilization. We are opposed to any modification, expansion, or liberalization of laws on these vital subjects.” (Letter to stake presidents in the state of Washington, October 27, 1970.)

Yes, blessed is the husband and wife who have a family of children. The deepest joys and blessings in life are associated with family, parenthood, and sacrifice. To have those sweet spirits come into the home is worth practically any sacrifice.
We realize that some women, through no fault of their own, are not able to bear children. To these lovely sisters, every prophet of God has promised that they will be blessed with children in the eternities and that posterity will not be denied them.

I think of young mothers and fathers who are faithfully having their families while still in school—or just newly out—trying to make ends meet even as they hope for a brighter financial future someday.

Mothers Who Know Bear Children
Mothers who know desire to bear children. Whereas in many cultures in the world children are "becoming less valued,"2 in the culture of the gospel we still believe in having children. Prophets, seers, and revelators who were sustained at this conference have declared that "God's commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force."3 President Ezra Taft Benson taught that young couples should not postpone having children and that "in the eternal perspective, children—not possessions, not position, not prestige—are our greatest jewels."4
Faithful daughters of God desire children. In the scriptures we read of Eve (see Moses 4:26), Sarah (see Genesis 17:16), Rebekah (see Genesis 24:60), and Mary (see 1 Nephi 11:13–20), who were foreordained to be mothers before children were born to them. Some women are not given the responsibility of bearing children in mortality, but just as Hannah of the Old Testament prayed fervently for her child (see 1 Samuel 1:11), the value women place on motherhood in this life and the attributes of motherhood they attain here will rise with them in the Resurrection (see D&C 130:18). Women who desire and work toward that blessing in this life are promised they will receive it for all eternity, and eternity is much, much longer than mortality. There is eternal influence and power in motherhood.

In addition to throwing off the body's homeostasis, excess sugar may result in a number of other significant consequences. The following is a listing of some of sugar's metabolic consequences from a variety of medical journals and other scientific publications.
1. Sugar can suppress your immune system and impair your defenses against infectious disease.
3. Sugar can cause can cause a rapid rise of adrenaline, hyperactivity, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and crankiness in children.
4. Sugar can produce a significant rise in total cholesterol, triglycerides and bad cholesterol and a decrease in good cholesterol.
9. Sugar can cause many problems with the gastrointestinal tract including: an acidic digestive tract, indigestion, malabsorption in patients with functional bowel disease, increased risk of Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis.
10. Sugar can cause premature aging.
11. Sugar can lead to alcoholism.

21. Sugar can contribute to osteoporosis.

44. Sugar is enemy #1 of your bowel movement.
50. Sugar can cause depression.
55. Diets high in sugar will increase free radicals and oxidative stress.
57. High sugar consumption of pregnant adolescents can lead to substantial decrease in gestation duration and is associated with a twofold increased risk for delivering a small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infant.
58. Sugar is an addictive substance.
59. Sugar can be intoxicating, similar to alcohol.
61. Decrease in sugar intake can increase emotional stability.
63. The rapid absorption of sugar promotes excessive food intake in obese subjects.
65. Sugar adversely affects urinary electrolyte composition.
66. Sugar can slow down the ability of your adrenal glands to function.
67. Sugar has the potential of inducing abnormal metabolic processes in a normal healthy individual and to promote chronic degenerative diseases.
69. Sugar increases your risk of polio.
70. High sugar intake can cause epileptic seizures.

Counting Pennies at Home Tip of the Day

Another anti-disposable post:
As a way to save on paper towels, we have some house rules on how to clean up stuff.
1. If you have to clean up a spill in the kitchen, use the dishrag we usually have draped over the sink
2. If you have to dry your hands after washing, use the hand towels we have draped over the oven handle.
3. The only time papers towels are to be used is when cleaning the babies' faces or hands.
In order to encourage the kids to follow these, rules, I store the paper towels in the top shelf of one of our cabinets above the sink to make them extra-inconvenient to reach, therefore, hopefully causing the kids to think twice before using them.

Here's something new I learned about organizing. It doesn't have to take all day. What I have started doing is to set the timer for 20 minutes. I then set out three large boxes (I use the plastic kind, but cardboard works fine, too) and one large trash bag. In one box I place the things I want to keep there, in the second, I place things that go in other parts of the house, and in the third I place things I want to give away. Of course in the trash bag goes....trash. For twenty minutes intervals I will organize things this way and when I'm finished, at least I have one drawer or one shelf organized and can move on to the next section when time permits. If your microwave is like mine, you often have unidentified stuff stuck on. To easily remove this, we place a bowl of water in the microwave for three minutes. I then remove the bowl using hotpads and easily wipe down the interior as the stuck-on stuff has been loosened by the steam! My eight-year-old does this every Saturday, but I always make sure I am the one to remove the bowl of water or serious burns could occur.

Dusters come in many shapes and sizes, but my favorite is the Swiffer Duster. You know I tend to stay away from disposables, but since these dusters can be used over and over again, I don't mind putting them to good use. It seems that the dust adheres to them much better than with feather dusters and they are easier to maneuver than an old sock. The kids love to use them, too!

Before I (or one of the kids) clean the kitchen after dinner, I begin by spraying certain surfaces with a spray bottle filled with water, such as the stove or any other surface that may have caked-on food. By the time I get to wiping it down, the food is already loosened for easy removing.

Because I have nine children, including a set of three-month-old twins, it is a challenge to keep up on the housework. One trick I use to get a head start on the next day is this: Once all of the children go to bed, I set my kitchen timer for twenty minutes. Even if the babies don't go to bed until midnight, I am rigid about doing this. I use that time to finish up kitchen chores, fold laundry, separate our cow's cream from the milk, straighten up the living room, etc. When the timer goes off, I stop in the middle of whatever I am doing, or I have a tendancy to go overboard and stay up too late. I reward myself by getting a bowl of ice cream (you could probably take or leave that tip!) and sitting down to the computer to listen to The Book of Mormon being read if I haven't done that yet, or reading friends' blogs, or sitting in my recliner to look at a gardening magazine.

Eating at Home Tip of the Day

This tip relates to the "Counting Pennies at Home" tip. At meal times, we rarely serve our children anything to drink other than water, and sometimes, milk. We find that if they have sugary drinks, they usually are too full for their meal, and we feel good knowing that they are at least having one of eight servings of water per day. Plus we save a few pennies each meal.

The babies stayed up extra late this evening, so I ended up watching a TV program on The Food Network called Paula's Party. It was an entertaining show in which an older, southern woman gives cooking tips for entertaining. This evening, she happened to feature a hunky chef with whom she continually flirted, while he taught us how to make a dessert that is truly romantic, complete with sugared rose petals. Every other evening or so, I have my thirteen-year-old daughter put the ingredients in the bread machine for fresh bread the next morning. Here is the recipe:
In bread machine pan, pour ingredients in this order:
1 1/2 cups milk
3 Tbls oil
3 Tbls honey
2 tsp salt
4 cups whole wheat flour (fresh-ground within the week)
2 1/2 Tbls vital wheat gluten
2 1/4 tsp yeast, placed in a small well dug in the flour
Place pan in bread machine, then set timer for the next morning and wake up to the smell of fresh-baked bread!
