I will be sitting here by my computer from 10:00 AM until 11:45 MST to share my beliefs as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or, as we are otherwise known, a Mormon.

Today's video in entitled "Charity, An Example of the Believers". I hope you enjoy it as much as I did...

Not sure if the chat is over yet but had a question. I know that Mormons read the Bible but didn't know what role it played. Do you view it as equal with the book of mormon, not as important, more important? Also, whichever answer it is could you elaborate on why the mormons believe that way? Thank you!

Hi Lesters,

Thank you very much for you question. I will definitely get to it, but I just need to look up some references to which I'd like to refer in my comment. Thank you for your patience. :)

I don't really have questions about Mormonism, because I'm a member, but my question is how do you handle your kids in church and get them to keep calm? My kids are 3 and 19 months (and 1 on the way) and we ALWAYS end up in the hallway no matter what we try. Also, my 19 month old won't go to nursery alone :( .

Okay, Lesters. We do use The Bible and consider it The Word of God. We also use The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants and The Peal of Great Price as our official set of scriptures. We love The Book of Mormon because it stands as another testament of the reality of Jesus Christ. It also helps us to understand some of the more confusing parts of The Bible, such as when one is writing a report and uses more than one source to gain a better understanding of the subject matter.

As far as The Book of Mormon is concerned, Joseph Smith, the prophet who restored the Church of Jesus Christ, said...

“I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book”

We believe The Book of Mormon to be "the most correct" book because it was translated only once, by the power of God. We also believe that many "plain and precious" things were lost from The Bible during the vast number of translations it has undergone. For more references to that, you can read here...

Once of our articles of faith states...

8 We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

Does this help give you an idea of how we use The Book of Mormon and The Bible together?

Brianna, I'm sure we do the same things that many others, including yourself, do. :) We bring Cheerios, we bring books, we bring colors and paper. We try everything. With our 24-month-old twins, invariably one of us will have to go out into the foyer with them. One thing my husband is very good about, however, is that he makes sure to make foyer time not a fun time. He makes the kids sit very still on his lap, almost like a time out, and makes it so that they prefer to stay in the chapel. It took me a while to grasp this concept as a new mom, but I certainly learned the wisdom of it!

As far as nursery is concerned, we stayed in with our twins for a while to get them accustomed to the leaders and the other kids, but finally, one day we just decided that they had to learn to stay in there on their own. Yes, they cried and cried, but eventually, they cried less and less and now they happily run down to hall to nursery after sacrament meeting! It was one of the hardest things for me to do, let them cry it out, because I'm not a cry-it-out mom, but because John and I both have callings which require our utmost attention and we couldn't have the twins with us while we performed our responsibilities, we thought it was best to go this route.

Just know that this stage is temporary and soon your kids will be old enough to help with your new babies! Good luck to you and keep on keeping on!

Thanks for sharing that video! I have always been impressed with our marching band--and my husband and I have laughed (not unkindly) because every year, there's someone out there in a wheelchair, or using crutches (permanently), or the young woman with prosthetic legs in the bandfront...it's an amazing organization, the largest in our state, and one of the reasons is that ALL are welcome. They make me so proud. And I know there are other kids with things you can't see...our autistic nephew, for example, is a proud band member as well. It's SO important, isn't it? Many thanks again for sharing!

Lesters, let me also add this reference in answer to your question from the introduction to The Book of Mormon...

"The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains, as does the Bible, the fulness of the everlasting gospel."
