I have to tell you, this contest was so fun! It was awesome to see how many people knew me intimately, and for those who didn't, they soon did once they took the how-well-do-you-know-me quiz. Here were the questions, along with where you can find the answers if you didn't take the quiz...

2. What would I have named the baby I am currently gestating had he been a girl? Answer HERE.

3. Who did my spooky internet stalker turn out to be? Answer HERE.

4. How do I keep a single fly from bothering my sleeping babies? Answer HERE.

5. At what recent event did I feel like a total failure? Answer HERE.

6. I can die happy after I finish what particular task each day? Answer HERE.

7. What feature about my husband does my grandmother particularly like? Answer HERE.

8. What did the 14-year-old girl do during the black-out at her slumber party? Answer HERE.

9. Which twin was lying on the floor recently while the other ran circles around him? Answer HERE.

10. Recount one cool person we saw at McDonald's. Answer HERE.

There were many of you who received a perfect score on the quiz, so from your group, I drew a random name, and here is the winner......

...LAYNE B.!

Congratulations, Layne! If you could just email me your mailing address (mom2my9 [at] gmail [dot] com), I will get THIS apron off to you....

Thanks to everyone who played, and if you didn't win, don't worry, I will be giving away more aprons in the future!

And now, for some holiday cheer. To give credit where credit is due, I first saw this on Trench Mommy's blog and I was, how do I say it....inspired? Hope you are, too! Have a great day!

Enter my Picture Caption Contest for a Chance to Win a $25 Amazon Gift Card!

I would like all of you who participated in last week's picture caption contest to know how much I appreciated you helping us out with getting this new linky set up. Brent took care of any bugs that may have been causing problems and things are up and running with "Picture Caption Linky" for good now!

Because we had so much fun last week, I decided I would like to do it again this week, and hopefully every week hereafter! As a thanks for helping me out last week and for participating in this and the following picture caption contest next week, I will be randomly drawing one name for a $25 Amazon gift card on July 31st for all who participated this month! All you have to do is enter your caption and you will automatically be placed in the random drawing! That goes for those of you who linked up last week, too!

For now, I have decided that I will not actually choose the funniest or most clever caption as a way of determining the prize winner. We're not all blessed with wit, but we CAN all think of SOMETHING to enter for a random chance to win. What do you think? Fair? That being said, I did say that last week that I would pick a winner for the most clever caption, and the one that made me laugh out loud the hardest was....

"But you said not to go in the pool!" entered by The Chaotic Christensens at http://chaoticchristensens.blogspot.com/ !

Yes, I guess I'm currently enjoying potty humor at this stage of life! Thanks again for all of your contributions and I'm SOOOOO looking forward to your funny ideas this week! Here's your picture!

Homemaker Mondays: Natural Sugar Substitute

Welcome to...

Thank you for joining us! If you're new to this carnival and would like to enter your post, please check HERE for the rules and regs.

We had a great turnout last Monday and received lots of inspiring entries. There are so many smart, creative, industrious homemakers out there and I am honored to have them meet here for the party!

YOURS: As was the case last week, I had a difficult time picking out this week's "YOURS" post, but one entry stayed in my mind all week long. It could be because I am trying to lose one pound each week until next June, so wish me luck on that. Carla's post about a natural sugar substitute intrigued me. I had given up trying to find a sugar substitute as I try to stay away from the synthetic artificial sweeteners because of the associated health risks. Carla, however, has found a natural sugar substitute called Stevia and is cultivating it in her home. She had a little trouble getting her Stevia plant home in top-notch condition...

...but she nursed it back to health and made it look like this...,

...then prepared the dried leaves for use in cooking and baking. See how she did this and learn more about cultivating Stevia @ Carla's "A Mellow Life is a Good Life". This post was truly an inspiration to me and, who knows, it could change my life! I am a sugar addict after all and that needs to change. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Thank you so much for your inspiration, Carla!

MINE: I was so intrigued by Carla's entry that I decided to look into Stevia myself. It turns out it is quite the controversial subject. What I learned is that Stevia is a native herb of Paraguay and has been used by South Americans for hundreds of years as a sweetener in tea and as a medicinal remedy. Today it is not only used in South America, but also in Asia and Europe with no documented ill effects. Stevia was introduced into the U.S. market in the 80's as a food additive during the time aspartame developers were trying to get approval for their synthetic sweetener, but after aggressive lobbying by the sugar industry, the FDA banned food developers from using it in their products. Reasons stated by the FDA included the citation of a study that showed that Stevia given in large doses to rats caused a lower sperm count over time. Critics of this study cite that amounts hundreds of times the normal dosage were given to the test rats and that studies of the effects of aspartame on test rats has also had disturbing results, such as brain tumors. They also remind us that Stevia has been used with no ill effects for hundreds of years throughout the world. Today, Stevia can be sold in health food stores but cannot be touted as a sugar substitute. Instead the packaging must say that it is a "supplement". The concentrated Stevia oil I bought stated that children under 18 should not consume the product. Whether there is a true risk or the companies are abiding by FDA policy but it is completely safe for children, that is for you to decide for yourself.

The good news I learned about Stevia is that this natural herb has been touted as having a number of healing properties. Some of these include:
-lowering of blood sugar levels
-retarding the growth of plaque
-aiding in digestion
-healing of skin wounds
and
-inhibiting the growth of bacteria

In addition, Stevia has never been associated with the ill-effects linked to the use of aspartame (also known as NutraSweet). There are 92 documented ill effects to be exact. (I avoid aspartame or any other artificial sweetener like the plague. It is one of the five "poisons" my family tries to avoid, along with hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, nitrates and MSG.)

In light of all this interesting information I decided that this was something I needed to try. I had John go to the health food store in town, as we are visiting the states this weekend, and had him pick up any form of Stevia they had. He came back with two boxes of powdered Stevia and eight bottles of the concentrated liquid, some in flavors like lemon, cinnamon, and orange. My plan was to make a sugar-free lemonade, as there are diabetics and pre-diabetics in our family. Here's what we mixed up...

Two quarts of water and the juice of six small lemons...

...and 18 packets of Stevia powder (pictured on left)...

The end result was delicious and all of the family and friends gathered for my grandmother's 95th birthday party who tried it enjoyed it very much...

Stevia does not taste exactly like sugar. As with any other sugar substitute, it will take a little getting used to, but I am very excited about trying this healthy alternative in different recipes, like breads and cookies. I will let you know how it turns out. Again, thank you so much, Carla, for your useful tips and information. Armed with this new knowledge, maybe I will attain my goal of being skinny by the time our family reunion commences next summer!

OURS: Okay, now it's your turn! Let's see what tips, ideas, how-to's or any other type of homemaking inspiration you have for us. Remember to leave a comment as it's easier to enter you into the Mexican jewelry drawing that way. Have a happy Homemaker Monday, enjoy these posts, and make sure to leave lots of lovely comments at the places you visit! We hope to see you again next week...same place...same time. Have a great one!

I lied. I'm so sorry...

I told you I would have the picture of the Mexican necklace up yesterday. I lied. I didn't get to it. Please forgive me. So here it is...

...and a bit of a closeup...

This piece was hand made by Senora Laura and I thought it was gorgeous. It's a versatile piece that can be worn with so many different styles. I love jewelry like that! I also love the colors...the golds and reds...especially the reds; perfect for the upcoming fall and Christmas seasons. You may have noticed that I included the pair of matching earrings. Want to know how to win those, too? If you've included a post in yesterday's Homemaker Monday, just subscribe in a reader or by email (see top of left sidebar) and if you win, the earrings will be yours! If you haven't entered a post in yesterday's Mr. Linky, it's never too late, so go ahead and write something up or search your archives. I would also encourage you to check out everyone else's entry. There were some truly amazing tips and I can't wait until next week to show you my favorite post! Click HERE for the most recent carnival.

Homemaker Monday: 100% Whole Wheat Bread Machine Bread

Welcome to...

We're so glad you came!
If you're new and would like to participate in this carnival today, please check out the rules and regs HERE. Otherwise, enjoy YOURS, MINE and OURS!

YOURS: This week's "YOURS" was posted by RAE over at My Life on the East Coast. I loved reading this post because it reminded me that life isn't all about having an immaculate house and a completely controlled environment at all times. But what if the kids want to get out all the blankets and make forts?

Read what Rae does about that HERE. She even has an argument with herself, an angel on one shoulder, devil on the other so to speak. It cracked me up because I have had the same argument with myself all too often. I just never thought of writing it!
Rae ends her post by sharing some moments of familial bliss involving these...

and these...

Enjoy the entire post HERE and thank you very much, Rae!

MINE: Our Daily Bread

This is the way we get our bread so early in the morning...

There as nothing I love more than waking up to the smell of freshly-baked bread. Well, there are a few things I love more, but not too many. And in order to combat the miriad unhealthy foods my kids are exposed to, we like to grind our own flour, with this...

Almost every night one of us puts these ingredients...

...in our bread machine in this order:
1 1/2 cups raw milk (If you plan on leaving this is the machine overnight and you don't have raw milk, then use 1 1/2 cups water. We will add powdered milk in later. Otherwise the milk will could spoil. Raw milk doesn't spoil, but goes sour, which is okay when you're making bread.)
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons honey or molasses
2 teaspoons salt
4 cups whole wheat flour
(If you used water earlier, now add 1/3 cup plus 3 tablespoons powdered milk. Thanks for the reconstitution table, Hillbilly Housewife!)
3 tablespoons vital wheat gluten (you can get it at Walmart and I'll tell you about it in a minute)
2 1/2 teaspoons yeast, placed in a well dug into the flour, like this...

Vital wheat gluten in the key ingredient in making good whole wheat bread. It is the part of the flour that allows it to bind to itself. Without it, the bread can turn out crumby, literally, and who likes crumby bread? Check out how wonderful this loaf looks.

That's a compliment to the bread machine, not me. I just put the stuff in and the machine does all the work. You've gotta love modern technology!

One last thing. I store the paddle in the bread pan unattached to the pole in order to make sure it has dried completely. However, there have been more than a few times that I have put all the ingredients in the pan only to realize once it's too late that I haven't attached the paddle! I then have to carefully dig through the four cups of flour, try to find the paddle at the bottom of the milk and try to affix it to the pole. Not fun! Once my daughter did the same thing, but didn't realize it until after we got home from church expecting a warm and wonderful loaf for lunch. It smelled great, but when we looked into the pan, it was a cooked mess of boiled milk and flour still sitting on the top; utter disappointment after a long day at church!

I know I said one last thing before, but I really mean it this time. One last thing...Going back a bit, if you make sure to pour the oil into the tablespoon first, and THEN the honey, the honey will slip off the spoon like nobody's business, like this...

Hope you enjoy!

OURS: Now it's your turn! Don't forget to leave a comment. It's easier for me to enter you into the contest that way! And make sure to check out everyone else's post and leave encouraging comments for them. We all love comments!

We Have a Winner!

Here is the moment you've been waiting for! At first I was just going to write all ya'lls names on scraps of paper and have one of my kids draw out of a hat, but then Krissy, my blogging buddy, introduced me to random.org. I entered your names there....and the winner is....

Congratulations, Jia! (Didn't you just love how by pressing the space bar 20 times I was able to make it so much more suspenseful?)

You can find Jia's post HERE. Jia, just email me your mailing address and I'll get your gift to you!

If you're not Jia, are you sad that you didn't win? Never fear, you will get a chance to win jewelry like this every month! I have so enjoyed your tips, ideas, how-to's and even homemaking disasters (such as Jia's), that I have decided to host my own weekly blog carnival. I am calling it...

This is probably going to be a different kind of carnival than most of you have seen. Here are the rules:

1. Enter your screen name in "Mr. Linky" (this form will be posted at 6:00 AM every Monday) followed by a three or four word description of your post in parenthesis, like so:

Cooking
Baking
Raising Kids
Gardening
Sewing

Food Storage
Organizing
...or anything else that has to do with making your home a better place. You can even share homemaking disasters, because we can all learn from your mistakes!

2. Enter the URL of the post you want to enter, NOT your home page, otherwise I will have to go through and fix it. I might get angry and you wouldn't like me when I'm angry! (jk) If you don't know how to enable individual post pages, just go to your dashboard, then SETTINGS, then ARCHIVING, then ENABLE POST PAGES.

3. Please leave a comment.

DO STEPS 1 -3 AND GET ENTERED ONCE INTO THE MONTHLY DRAWING!

4. Add my link graphic to your post and get entered ONE MORE TIME! (You can get the code below.)

Is that clear as mud? But really, if you have any questions, please leave a comment and let me know.

The monthly prize will be a piece of Mexican jewelry, like the one just won, pictured here...

One last thing. If you'll notice my graphic...

...you'll see the words "yours, mine, and ours".
This means that each week I will feature my favorite submission from the previous week- "YOURS",
then I will post my homemaking tip - "MINE",
and finally I will post "Mr. Linky" and we will all enter our posts - "OURS"!

If your post gets featured, you can put this button on your sidebar if you would like...

You have 3 full days to enter my giveaway!

As you may already know, I have returned from our trip to Mazatlan with something for YOU! In a previous post, I asked for your ideas as to what souvenir I should bring back for you. Here's a hint: Normally, on any vacation, I would purchase several of these, but because I have six-month-old twins, they all too often get ruined.

Still not sure what it is?

Okay, fine, no more hints. Here it is...

This is a piece from the Micheal Gallery in Mazatlan. It is an antique silver and natural pearl combination that can be worn either as a necklace or a broach. I loved it because it could dress up a white button down shirt with jeans or add just the right sparkle to your favorite little black dress. I hope you like it!

By the by, if you haven't written your homemaking post, you have three full days to do it yet! The contest will close at 12:00 AM August 16th, so hurry and submit your entries! Remember you can submit as many as you would like, just make sure you go HERE or click on the graphic at the top of the blog to review the rules and leave me, in the comment form, the address where I can find your post. I will announce the randomly drawn winner at 12:00 PM on Saturday, August the 16th, so good luck everyone!

Let's get blogging!

How to Link a Picture to a URL in Blogger

This post is participating in Talk about Tuesday, a weekly feature at TheLazyOrganizer.com.blog. Check it out!

Hi Everybody! I just wanted to let you know that I've had a GREAT time reading some of the posts you all are coming up with for my MAZATLAN SOUVENIR GIVEAWAY! You are totally inspiring. I am just DYING to share some of the things I've read so far, so keep up the good work. Remember, if you post more than one homemaking tip, you can enter that one, too. Enter as many times as you want!

Just a couple of things to remember. When you enter, there are a two important steps you must take:

1. PLEASE leave me a comment on the CONTEST PAGE. Click here for that. In the comment, include the URL of the exact page you will be entering. I need you to do this because I will getting entries while I am on vacation and if you don't include your URL, I might get confused and not remember exactly what you entered. Remember, I have "mama" brain most of the time.

2. If you would like to have your name entered 3 MORE TIMES, then you need to copy this graphic...

...into your post AND make it link to my homepage. Here's how you do that:

(Disclaimer: Please excuse the idiotic pictures I took of my monitor to try to show you how to do this. This is DEFINITELY not a tutorial put on by Microsoft!)

A. Right click the image above.

B. Choose "save as..." and save it anywhere on our computer where you can find it, perhaps on the desktop or in your pictures.

C. Open your post.

D. Upload the image like you would any other picture, by clicking on the landscape button in your tool bar.

E. Click on the image. You should see little squares appear on the corners and edges.

F. Click the symbol in your tool bar, right next to the Text Color button, that looks like a chain link with a small globe under it.

(Here's a close-up)

G. A pop-up window should appear that will allow you to input my URL. Type it in. It should look like this: http://rtheyallyours.blogspot.com/

H. Click OK.

I. Publish your post.

There you have it. After you publish, look at your blog to make sure the link works. Just click on the image to see if it goes to my page.

All righty, then, let me know if you have any questions or if the words that were in my head made any sense. Remember, leave me a comment with your URL so I can go check it out! At the end of the contest, I will go to each post entry, if the image is there I will click on it, and if it goes to my homepage I will enter your name in 3 more times. Good luck and have fun! Those of you who have already entered are doing a fantastic job and I can't wait to feature your tips, ideas and how-tos! Thanks for playing!
