Can the 17-Year-Old Boy really not tell the twins apart?

He claims he can't. Whenever he is holding one at church, and someone approaches him and asks which twin he has, he shrugs his shoulders and says he doesn't know.

Whenever he addresses them, he just calls them "Baby", and they both respond.

Here's where I began to have my doubts, though. A few days ago, I told him that both the babies had had dirty diapers, and that I had just changed Twin B's diaper, but I'd really like it if he could change Twin A's diaper. He went to the living room, picked up Twin B, and proceeded to change his diaper. To me, that just seems a little too convenient.

What do YOU think?

Thanks for listening. :)

Knowing the 17 year old, I think you're right to be suspicious. I called yesterday and your 3 year old did a great job of answering the phone. He was so cute, and he speaks so well. However, in reply to my questions, he said that he could not say either of my names to tell you who called. (You were busy at the time.) Anyway, he was precious and it was fun to talk to him.

Ah, so it was YOU who called! He said I was supposed to call my mom!

My stepson is 20 and there is a lot of things he "did not know" as a teen. I wish I could give you an answer but I don't have any ideas even after having that teen in my life since he was 14. I suppose it is something we forget once we hit parenthood - how teens think, act, or whatever else they do. I am now raising a tween, and I have no answers.

so funny about the call!

I agree....sounds a little fishy to me!

I don't have an answer for you about your 17 year old. Maybe he intentionally likes not being able to tell them apart, even if he can.

haha, that certainly sounds like something the 17-year-old boy would do!

On the one hand, it does sound mighty suspicious. Very similar to how "the boys" do not know where things go to put them away, and yet are able to find them when they want to use them .... Hum mmm

On the other hand, maybe he really is challenged with it. Why then did he just grab one to change? Could have been your attitude / look on your face/ not wanting to get in 'more' trouble ....

I helped raise brothers, had four sons of my own, had numerous other teenage boys both "officially" and "un-officially" live here, and yet I am still considerably stumped in understanding them!! Sorry!!

Only suggestion currently coming to mind, is to have the twins wear different colored, the equivilant of the WWJD braclets, all of the time. However, I guareente you, that a certain spunkier one of those twins, WILL, of his own accord, come up with them switching them in only about a year and a halfs time ....

Glad I could be of help today friend o:-p ....

I want to be good..may be he can distinguish them when they are close, not when he sees only one at a time....but I have strong doubts ;-)

Sounds to me as if you did not give birth to a dumb child, seventeen years ago. Perhaps this is a moment to be proud of his slick moves, eh?

I've just spent about two hours in reading your blog. You have lived a remarkable many lives in the time you have lived. May I just say that I am in awe of you and your family.

This made me laugh. I have to say, I am suspicious. I have boy/girl twins, and some of our best friends have identical twins. Even though we live far apart now, and over a year can go by between visits, I can still tell them apart. My best friends in high school were a pair of identical twins. I could easily tell them apart. But the teachers couldn't. They played all sorts of tricks on the teachers that way! But once you get to know a set of twins, it becomes pretty easy to tell them apart. Do any of your other kids make the same claim? He seems like a great kid, and I'm not taking the whole thing seriously, but I think he is faking. Just my opinion. Too funny!

Becky, no, all of the other kids can tell them apart, well maybe except for the 3-year-old boy, but that is understandable!

soooo funny and I would say totally typical of a teenage boy/man. He is great by the way!

I would be suspicious! I've taught identical twins when I was a teacher, and even though they were identical, there was always a way to tell the difference between the two.

We've tried to get my 18 year old nephew to change diaper of his cousins before...but without success! (We really didn't expect him to!:)

Haha. This is funny! If that were my son, I'd have to believe that he knows the difference, but wants YOU to believe he doesn't, just so that he can prove that he does indeed know. I think teenage boys must take secret online courses on the subject of Triple Reverse Psychology!

Haha! That does sound a bit suspicious!

My male 17 yr old could not tell twins apart at a dance, but he has always known his siblings. Now diapers..He used to pay off his sisters to change diapers while he was babysitting..I made him go help his 2yr old sister who was potty training, he so did not want to do it! SO I am definately not believing he can't tell them apart. I think ya need to talk with him :)

Hee hee hee! I bet my husband would do the same thing-- and he can't use being 17 as an excuse!

So I just came across your blog and had to look at your twin postings! I have 20 month old twin boys and I was laughing so hard and feeling like someone DOES understand what it's like to have to put rope around your dining room table to keep them out of trouble!!! I do want to pull hair out sometimes with the back-biting, climbing, and divide and conquer attitude they have, but I wouldn't trade them for the world! Great Blog!
