Homemaker Monday: We Love Our Flippin' Waffle Maker!

Welcome to the 74th weekly edition of...

Thank you for joining us! If you're new to this carnival and would like to enter your post, please check HERE for the rules and regs.

YOURS:
This week's "YOURS" goes to Cheryl B. over at "The House That Love Built"! Cheryl is, honestly, one of my most favorite blog commentators. She writes the most thoughtful, insightful comments, and I really look forward to reading what she has to say! Cheryl wrote a post about all the different uses for a pastry blender. I really never knew there were so many, and I think my life is going to be a bit easier because of Cheryl's insight. Click HERE to see what I mean. Thank you so much, Cheryl, for being a part of my world!

MINE: “Flippin’”….it’s a word Mormons use instead of another four-letter word. Some Mormons also say “fetchin’” or “freakin’”. Personally, I try to refrain from using these words, as their use still sometimes makes me think of the real four-letter word. However, sometimes, when I’m really, really, really mad, I say “fetchin’”. But only when I’m really mad.

So, when I describe the waffle maker I bought for the 13- and 9-year-old boys for Christmas, I’m not using a four-letter-word substitute, but rather describing what this thing really does. It really flips, like those waffle makers you find at continental breakfast bars in hotel lobbies. It’s the coolest thing ever, because it makes a beautiful, evenly cooked, light and crispy waffle.

Here’s how the 13-year-old boy made waffles for the whole fam…

First, he got out the following ingredients...

- 2 egg yolks
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 cups milk
- 1/3 cup oil
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 egg whites, stiffly beaten
- 1 tbsp baking powder

...which quickly becomes a large mess...

He then preheated the waffle maker and put all the ingredients, except the egg whites, in a large mixer bowl and beat on low until moistened...

He then increased the speed to medium and mixed until the batter was smooth.

Next, he beat the egg whites until stiff peaks formed. To be sure he had stiff peaks, he pulled up some of the egg white mixture with a spoon, and if the peak stood up, and the top did not fall over, he knew he had a stiff peak...

By hand, he gently folded in the beaten egg whites.

After cleaning up his mess without even being asking (YAY!), he carefully studied the manual...

...then, after enlightenment, poured 1/2 to 1 cup batter over the grids...

He closed the waffle maker, flipped it over...

...then baked until steam no longer escaped, about 3-5 minutes, or until the green light came on. Because there were 11 of us, including Grandma, he repeated many, many times.

Here's how our breakfast looked...

The 13-year-old boy hopes you enjoy this as much as we did!

After seeing my fatherinlaws flipping waffle iron I loved the idea of cooking two at the same time but didn't know there was a cheaper version of what he had... so I got a second Iron and make waffles twice as fast. love your recipe

Alessandra, what I didn't say is that it took him an hour and a half to make them! We need to work on his speed now!

So you were hungry...hahaha!

we have two waffle irons for that very reason. There are too many of us to make them one at a time. We could probably use three. lol I found an online catalog once that had a big commercial-sized waffle makers that would do our whole families waffles in two shots but it was like $200 so I didn't buy it.

I just did a blog post about my goals (or a few of them anyway).

My goodness Jen! First, I was kind of shocked when I read my name for the "yours" in today's posting. Then I became pink with embarrasement mixed with tearry eyed while filled with the 'warm fuzzies' as I read what you wrote about me. WOW!! I am honored. Thank-you.

I must tell you, that Brian just happened (God's amusing timing) to be reading over my shoulder as I logged onto your site. He had come into the room to tell me about something else. Anyways, he read along as I did. When we got to the point where the whole paragraph you wrote about me and my link showed on the screen, he told me to freeze it right there. He then went into the living room where the three sons were (currently laid off) and told them that they must come read what another blogger wrote about their mom and all of her "time on the computer" ;-}. Humerous moaning, accompanied with such things as "now we'll never get her off of there!" followed ;-b!!

If it weren't for the fact that this weekend we put close to $200 in to son #1's car, due to what it started doing when he brought me back home (and he too is laid off), and the fact that the radiator in our van can no longer be limped along... I would be ordering two of those waffle irons right now!!!!! !!!!! One for our house, and one for son #1 and wife.

We happen to have two waffle irons here, a small round one, and a old model four block square one. But "the boys" love making those flippin ones when we have had occasion to stay at a hotel .... I shall put them on the "to get latter" list. How long will you be able to get credit for sales?

The next time all of you are going to have them (waffles), right when you start getting ingredients out, turn your oven on to 200 degrees. Then line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and slide it into the oven. Every time a waffle is done, add it to the pan(s). That then works the same as a holding/warming oven. The pan is hottish when you pull it out, so use hot pads!

I use that method when making everybody french toast, or waffles, or pancakes, or omellettes, etc.. Then all can eat at the smae time! :-D

For what it's worth:
our blog site was: www.xanga.com/thehousethatlovebuilt

last week while at son #1's, he helped me start a visitor friendlyier one at: http://thebzhousethatlovebuilt.blogspot.com

I am honored to be a part of your world!

I got totally stuck on the part where your son cleaned up the mess "without being asked". That would make anything taste better.

Mmmmm... a waffle maker that flips like that is on my wish list, for sure. We do waffles with some close friends every Christmas Eve. Whatever toppings you want. Usually the ice cream is very popular, though this year the ordinary maple syrup was getting some good attention. Then we read the Nativity from Luke 2, and they've got these cool wood-block nativity pieces that the kids act it out with. Monkey was all about that part this year. It's a lovely tradition.

The waffles look great! We have a "flippin" waffle maker too, and eat waffles about once a week for dinner. I use Krusteas pancake mix though, it's a lot easier, but not as yummy.
