Please join us RIGHT NOW for the "Questions About Mormonism" Live Chat!

Good morning and welcome to the weekly "Questions About Mormonism Live Chat".

If you've ever had questions about the Mormon religion, but didn't know who to ask, I'll be sitting here by my computer today from 10:00 AM to 11:45 AM MST to chat.

Want to know more about the boys who ride around on bikes wearing white shirts and ties?

....why we store a year's supply of food?

...why we place such an importance on families?

...why we are called "Mormons"?

Feel free to ask any of these or any other question you might have. The following is a short inspirational video about finding happiness in today's world. I hope you enjoy it...

I hope you have a great day, now let's chat!

Why do LDS people spend so much effort on long term food and emergency supplies, as well as focus on preserving memories, family history, and journaling, when they belive the last days are right around the corner?

Hi Anon, thanks for your question. Yes, we do believe that we live in the "latter days". However, none of us know when the second coming of Christ will be. It could be tomorrow, it could be in a hundred years from now. What we do know is that calamity will reign, according to Revelations, and that we will need to be prepared for whatever might arise.

We also believe that journaling and preserving family histories can benefit not only ourselves, as we look back on our memories, but our children and grandchildren as well.

Does that answer your question?

May I add that we not only store food for our immediate families--that we are counselled to store a little extra for our neighbors or friends who are not prepared for an emergency...who could turn away a plea for help without an aching heart? If we are prepared, we won't have to, hopefully.

Thank you for that addition, Momza! So true!

I am curious if there are different "branches" of mormons like there are baptists, presbyterians, etc. The only reason I ask this is because when you see mormons portrayed in the media it's the girls all wearing the same dress style and the don't associate with the world outside of their communities. But your family doesn't seem to fit that bill.

roadrunner201, thank you for asking that question! I believe what you are seeing in the media are groups that have the initials "LDS" in their title, or call themselves "Mormon", but do not belong to the official Mormon church. The group to whom you are referring are probably called the "Fundamental LDS" group, which have made the news a lot lately for their polygamous lifestyle. Anyone affiliated with groups like these would not be considered a member of our church.

Mormons today do not practice polygamy. That was a limited practice that ended in 1890.

To answer your question directly, there are not different branches of The Mormon Church. The Mormon church is a very organized gospel, officially called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and is the same throughout the world, with over 13.5 million members. Our worldwide church is led and guided by a prophet called of God, and every Sunday, every church, throughout the world actually has the same lesson from the same manual, translated into scores of different languages. This is what makes Mormons such a close-knit group. We know that if we run into another Mormon on the street, we are going to share the same belief system and that is so comforting!

I hope I have answered your question!

Roadrunner201, I forgot to address the last part of your question. We Mormons are a part of society and there are actually many Mormons who are in congress, on pro sports teams, and other high-profile careers, such as Steven Covey, Steve Young, Glenn Beck and Orin Hatch. We also dress like pretty much everyone else, except that we have a standard of modesty where we avoid clothing that exposes the shoulders, stomach or back, also avoiding short skirts and shorts, and clothing that is tight or revealing. We also avoid facial and body piercings, or extreme hairstyles, so as not to detract from what is on the inside. Does that make sense?
